Full Circle, Ruptured Heart

The timing stunned me.
Within hours of starting a new job, after having spent more than two decades on the previous one, I learned today that my best friend since grade school (the first grade, in fact) had passed away after years of on-again, off-again illnesses.
Full circle, ruptured heart.
A kind and gentle man – that’s him on the far right – there was never a bad word between us, and we hadn’t ever missed at least a birthday phone call in nearly 50 years, at least not as far as I can recall.
While we didn’t get to spend a great deal lot of time together during the past 20 years, the times that we did speak never failed to sweep away the years
