The Final Battle. The Final Victory. Not Yet The End.

Fury, forged in the darkness,

is anesthetized by the morning light

(still, it throbs).

Long frozen tears, oozing ’til daybreak,

are cauterized by the frothy heat

(still, they fester).

Disappointment, anxiety,

depression, hatred

(and love)

suffocate in a thin stew

of stupor,

of boredom,

of addiction

of indifference.

The ice coldness melts

my skin.

The searing heatness freezes

my brain.

I scream into the silence.

No one hears me

(I won’t allow it).

Lukewarm spittle.

Tepid indifference.

But I can’t leave

(not yet anyway).

Much remains to be.

For here I am

(still)

Unbroken

Unchanged

Unbowed.

I need the fight.

Souls are like athletes, that need opponents worthy of them, if they are to be tried and extended and pushed to the full use of their powers, and rewarded according to their capacity – Thomas Merton
