Stepping out into the early morning chill, overcoat folded neatly across my arm (but at the ready), hat sitting flat across this old gray head, I am reminded of earlier days.
A time spent rushing headlong into obstacles fully unprepared, confident of satisfactory resolutions or of bendings to my will. Even unforced errors would be fuel enough to power me towards the next great adventure.
Somewhere along the way, due either to raw scars or aging stars, a resignation kicked in. Steps became necessary, plans set in motion.
And past performance no longer guaranteed future results.
Actually, it never did.
With so many things left undone, there are only so many missteps left willing to set me straight.
Winter is just around the corner.
But I’m prepared.
