From pretty white lies,
To spiteful, murderous falsehoods.
From petty little hurts,
To extreme, vicious cruelties.
From today’s piddling anxieties,
To tomorrow’s deadly fears.
From simple, negligent love,
To hateful, barbaric annihilation.
From loving creation in light,
To damning control in the dark.
From a singular moment of conception,
To a lifetime of refuting our birthright.
It takes more courage than we imagine to be perfectly simple with other men.
Our frankness is often spoiled by a hidden barbarity, born of fear – Thomas Merton
If this is who we have become,
This is not yet who we need remain.
