“The Mission Of My Life”

Over at Aleteia, Elizabeth Scalia has again this week reminded us that John Henry Cardinal Newman is at least one step closer to being officially declared a saint in the Catholic Church. You can find the post (originally published in January, 2016) here.

Meanwhile, Bishop Robert Barron’s recently released DVD series, Pivotal Players, includes Newman as one of the six most critical influencers and thinkers who “not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civilization.”

That’s certainly an impressive feat for a late convert!

Cardinal Newman left behind a huge volume of writings. I have barely begun to tackle any of them. No doubt that could take several lifetimes!

But he did compose a very short prayer that I have found meaningful and moving over the past couple of years.

This version was found at CatholiCity.com:

The Mission Of My Life

God has created me to do Him some definite service.

He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another.

I have my mission.

I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons.

He has not created me for naught.

I shall do good; I shall do His work.

I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments.

Therefore, I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away.

If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him.

If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about.

He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers.

He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me.

Still, He knows what He is about.

We were, each of us, loved into existence for a specific purpose. We were, each of us, given a definitive mission. And so remember:

He has not created me for naught.

May we today find, act upon, and begin to fulfill our own individual mission – whatever it might happen to be.

Peace
