Mercy

We see through tears the clearest truth,
Despite the lonely silence we all know,
In moments when the flight from pain
Halts to embrace the wounded absent loved.

Though close, no longer us is who we are–
The past recedes in falling fog from light.
These open wounds that were not wounds bleed out
Our vulnerable adamantine strength:

Our dignity is proved through all this grief
When those who know not theirs are want
To grieve that all they sought was neither ours
Or their own wounding dignity because

No longer us is who we are again–
They are now us as we have been.
