After Charles Bukowski [rev. 10-29-2018]

After Charles Bukowski

Some days I want
to punch Adam in the nose
for getting me into this circus,

but then I remember
I’m going to die
because of him, too.

It sure would be
a hell of a thing
to have to explain

to the Second Adam
after all my Yom Kippurs.
He might hold it against me–

I think I’d hold it against him
if he didn’t forgive Adam
knowing how well they say

he walks through the fire.
Lucky for me, my left cross
has never packed any punch,

but no one ever forgets my right cross.
Either way, if they’re right,
and God really can kill me…

twice
…it’s still not time
to start holding any punches.
