The Barque of Faith

The Barque of Faith

When the currents
move in many directions
and we’ve no star
to guide us to port,

when the fog of night
creeps all around us
and we know not
where the enemy lurks,

when the cannons blaze
and broadsides scatter
lead and splinters and blood,

and we draw the blades
of close quarters combat
until we’re dead or we’ve won;

then to assess
and search out our bearings
once the tumult has passed,

we do that
which will continue to sustain us
when the next shadows are cast;

we call for light,
check the map,
and trust the anchor
we’ve to still us:

the anchor–
the anchor
of the Cross!

The Cross of Christ
our hope, in prayer
in Him we trust.
