The Wasteland and the Prophet

The Wasteland and The Prophet

In the desert the prophet takes refuge
and recollects the wasteland:

The shifting sands are not enough–
no fruit is found where none take root.

The shifting sands are not enough to notice,
wise men see them shift and think themselves wise.

They cry out, of shifting current, you shift
and are the cause of all our maladies today.

The cultivators sew their seed.
The cultivators sew a different seed and never harvest.
The cultivators sew seed after seed and think all seasons springtime.

The locusts harvest only themselves–
a swarm shifting currents of sand.

From age to age, only the prophet
escapes the wasteland.

In the desert, some ground may be found
firm enough for a cactus to bear fruit.
