Captivated

Captivated

Less and less
time for prayer.

There are those who meditate
to make their work their prayer.

There are those who pray and work
according as the times of the day are set.

And there are those who pray unceasingly
as rare as their gift is.

I am more at work and find it incompatible
with my contemplation which calls
for a frequent heremitic solitude.

And now I am more at work and my work,
being neither prayer nor set between prayer nor as of yet unceasing,
draws me away from you,
you who loves and whom I love
in the solitude
as in a wedding chamber.

I said to an oracle
I find myself
more and more
in the world.

He bade me contemplate
that further
and I have
and will.

I would like to have said
I find myself
more and more
captivated by the world.

Finding not myself,
and even less you,
just more and more captive,
pleading for you

to come again

and rescue me,
set me free
to let you take care of me
as you always request
when we are alone
in our wedding chamber.
