A Skull and A Bone

A Skull and A Bone
-Circa 2006

A skull and a bone
rest curiously beneath
the crucifixion.

I look at the stained glass,
light of day breaking into the sanctuary,
wondering of the
many occult and militant signifiers
the skull and bone could represent
(especially after the
twentieth century).

I ask the sacristan.

He tells me
the skull is sin,
the bone is
death,
and Christ defeated
them by dying on that cross.

“Especially
after the twentieth century,”
I think.
