Reaching Back – Grace Pending

From this angle, sitting on my front porch, the branches and the leaves on that lusty tree across the way appear to be propping up the sun. Holding it in place for just a few more moments, before it finally slips away beyond the night. A brief, humble ceremony given over to acknowledge a simple daily debt.

Just before the letting go.

It left me wondering whether memories are ever truly kind. They remind us too easily of those days soaked in drink and ease and youthful vigor. Only to suddenly slam us with the knowledge that we, too, traded them all in for a handful of lies, never looking back. And that we would likely do it all again if given the chance.

But maybe we were meant to have something more in common with those branches and those leaves across the way. Holding on to a single day. A day without any before it.

Just before the letting go.
