I hadn’t realized until recently just how sobering are the windows hanging in my own front porch.
Mirrors reveal much, but always in the reverse. Leaving us to reinterpret and reinvent as we fiddle with the lighting, and hone deceitful stares.
Those front porch windows?
Unfiltered, they can spew nothing except everything. Whether we choose to look out or not. There is nothing to hide, nothing magical over which to linger.
Just simple truths carried back through a simple moment.
Even their dual faces serve a purpose. One side constantly exposed to the outside, one leading back towards us. As if each in their way can be heard shouting, one to the other, “just look at what I’ve found for you today.”
I’ve surely gotten the better end of that exchange over the years.
Come to think of it, I’m no longer certain that the face I brandish through those front porch windows is any more real than the one reflected back by my bathroom mirror.
But at least it’s not reversed.
