Merton And Despair’s False Premise

Merton Despair Hope Catholic

When despair muscles out rationality,
Ego takes quick possession,
Like a lender foreclosing
On a debt.
Lies and jealousy and envy
And hate, become as
Toys in a child’s
Hands.
Playthings to distract us from
Our wounds,
Mindlessness to chase us from
Our birthright.
Despair is the absolute extreme of self-love. It is reached when a person deliberately turns his back on all help from anyone else in order to taste the rotten luxury of knowing himself to be lost – Thomas Merton
