Nouwen On Friendship


We, especially men, always want to fix things, to provide solutions, to make it better – whatever it happens to be at the moment.
But sometimes, just our very presence, given over wholly and released completely, can be the far better course.
Especially when it comes to those things which cannot be understood this side of eternity, or to those situations that will absolutely refuse to respond to our, sometimes too-clever-by-half, mortal interactions and limitations.
Being – not doing – may well spark healing.
At the very least, it can provide another soul with a touch of humanity that may be missing from that singular, if not desperate, moment:
When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand
