Thomas Merton Speaks To The 21st Century

Thomas Merton

Readers of my blog know that Thomas Merton continues to inspire and inform my writing. His literary works are massive – including commentaries, reviews, poems, letters, and journals – and so I still have much to read and still have much to learn.
In November, 2014, just after the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, I ran across a video from what is believed to be Merton’s last public address, taking place on the morning of December 10, 1968 – just hours before his accidental death in Bangkok, and just days after his meeting with the Dalai Lama. Notably, Merton’s final journals reference his up-coming trip to Thailand, and allude to the very talk presented here. His life abruptly cut short – exactly 27 years to the day of his entering Gethsemani – Merton’s final recorded words, I believe, still speak to us today – more so today after the UK’s vote to leave the EU last evening
