Pope Benedict XVI Announces His Resignation

Man, what a story to wake up to.

The Vatican Radio website published the following this morning:

Pope Benedict XVI on Monday said he plans on resigning the papal office on February 28th. Below please find his announcement.

Full text of Pope’s declaration

Dear Brothers,
I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.

I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.

For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.
Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.
From the Vatican, 10 February 2013

I’m stunned, saddened, shocked. But all things happen according to the will of God, so in the end, we have that assurance.

We have this assurance too: Benedict won’t be going on speaking tours bashing his successor, as certain president-types are wont to do.

I had a text from a friend waiting for me when I woke up: “I didn’t know the pope could resign.”

And then I checked the news feeds.

    Come, Holy Spirit

  3. JLG says:

    Lord have mercy on us!

  4. Tom Perna says:

Great minds think a like Larry D. I also wrote something on this topic. I wonder if those crackpot Nuns on the Bus are celebrating this morning. We must be ready to defend Holy Mother Church from the attacks that are already coming.

    Come Holy Spirit!

  5. I hope the next pope will be so traditional that the liberals will long for the days of Pope Benedict!

  6. Nerina says:

    I am heartbroken.

  7. Grey Bear says:

Ask the Holy Spirit to give us a true leader who will cleanse not only the Vatican but every corrupt Diocese & all the theological heretics. The LCWR is a cancer as are the numerous effeminate Bishops & Priests. St. Paul would put them all in their place. We need a man who will promptly abolish the CCHD, CRS, professed sodomites, the ‘pax-christie’ & ‘new ways ministry, social justice-communist & lock away ‘howard hubbard’ & his ilk in a secluded monastery in China !

The long knives are already out. Fox News had an article about how Papa Benedetto’s reign was a failure. As I said on my blog, I am sure the liberals will once again predict a Pope who will do what they want. But as in the past, I know they will be disappointed.

  9. Lena says:

I thought you were joking when I read your headline for today.

  10. joekstl says:

“Benedict won’t be going on speaking tours bashing his successor, as certain president-types are wont to do.” I assume you may have meant “predecessor”, but if not, thanks for admitting that certain former Republican vice-president types have been wont to do (cf. Dick Cheney).

    • thelarryd says:

Benedict’s predecessor was Bl Pope John Paul II, and the next pope will be his successor. So no, “successor” is indeed the correct term.

      Try to keep up Joe.
