Supreme Court Rules to Protect Crisis Pregnancy Centers’ 1st Amendment Rights

When I woke up this morning, I didn’t realize today was going to be a great day. I mean, the sun was shining, my lungs were working and all, and there was coffee in the house, but I had no idea how much of an absofreakinglutely great day it was going to be.

How great? This great:

From the LA Times: Supreme Court Rules for Faith-Based Pregnancy Centers, Blocks California Disclosure Law

The Supreme Court on Tuesday blocked enforcement of a California law that requires faith-based crisis pregnancy centers to notify patients that the state offers subsidized medical care, including abortions.

By a 5-4 vote, the justices said the disclosure rule likely amounts to compelled speech that violates the 1st Amendment. The court did not directly strike down the entire California law, but sent the case back to lower courts with instructions that enforcement of key provisions be immediately blocked while the legal challenge continues.

The California law forces the centers, which strongly oppose abortion, to notify women that the procedure is an option for them.

Justice Clarence Thomas said the challengers are “likely to succeed” on their 1st Amendment challenge. He was joined by four other conservatives in the case of National Institute of Family and Life Advocates vs. Becerra.

The Susan B Anthony List applauded the decision:

“We are extremely pleased to see the nation’s pro-life pregnancy centers and their advocates vindicated by the Supreme Court,” said Chuck Donovan, president of the Charlotte Lozier Institute, the research arm of Susan B. Anthony List. “The Court sent a clear message today that California’s cruel mandate unacceptably infringes on pregnancy centers’ First Amendment liberties – a ruling that will reverberate across the country wherever these remarkable nonprofits have been subjected to state bullying as they strive to carry out their mission of love. Pregnancy centers exist to serve and support mothers in the courageous decision to give their children life, even under difficult circumstances. Approximately 2,750 centers around the country provide a multitude of free services for millions of women, as well as tens of thousands of men, at nearly $161 million in annual cost savings to their communities. The biggest winners in today’s decision are women, children, and families.”

It’s always a great day when the US Constitution is upheld, individual rights are defended, the unborn are afforded, at the very least, a level of dignity shown to those already living, and evil doesn’t win the day.
